The 2012 model year upgrades to the Genesis include the new 5-liter Tau V8 engine, which is an enlarged version of the previous 4.6-liter Tau. The 4.6 remains available, as does the 3.8; moreover, the 5.0 and the 3.8 now feature direct injection. The 6-speed automatic transmissions from Aisin and ZF have been all replaced with Hyundai's own 8-speed automatic. The R-Spec is a $1000 option package on the 5.0, which includes the polished-aluminum 19-inch wheels seen here.

Externally, the headlight is reconfigured. The parking light is a new LED unit (it takes up the "sweep" between the high and low beam headlights), and LED daytime running lights are now included as well. Turn signal has been moved inside the high beam as well (and when activated, the corresponding LED daytime running light is deactivated) for the US market, unlike the original Genesis whose turn signal was on the outside corner just like the Korean domestic version. The high beam remains halogen, and the low beam remains either halogen or Xenon (this one is Xenon).

It's good to have LED parking lights, as the original Genesis had incandescent bulb parking lights that could burn out after a few years; while the bulb is less than $1, the labor involved in removing and reinstalling the headlight assembly for the bulb replacement is over $80, and Genesis headlight assemblies are not user-serviceable and must be handled by the dealer.

Indeed, the parking light replacement on my own '09 Genesis is why I am killing a bit of time at my local Hyundai dealership. I am practicing my photo techniques for Barrett-Jackson Automobile Auction later in the day (especially trying to make up for a defect in my 18-55mm zoom lens that gives me asymmetric distortion at its widest settings), and it's worked out better than I thought.

Thanks to good service at this dealership (Puente Hills Hyundai in San Gabriel Valley, California) plus the excellent design of the Genesis itself, my love affair with the Genesis continues, despite my extreme displeasure with the fascist restoration in Hyundai's home country of South Korea. If anything, Hyundai's workforce may need support from foreign customers more than ever, as they try to fight off the fascists' threats on their rights.
