| Description = Hyundai gained tremendous amounts of respect by introducing the rear wheel drive luxury car, the Genesis, in 2008. I myself drive a 2009 Genesis 3.8, so I know first-hand that there is a lot of substance to the car.

For 2012, the Genesis gets a new engine option: the 5.0L V8, the enlarged version of the 4.6L V8 former flagship engine, which also remains available. The Genesis 5.0 can also be had in the R-Spec trim, which adds unique 19-inch wheels and a few trim changes. Additionally, the 3.8 gets direct injection and power increase, and all Genesis models lose their old Aisin and ZF 6-speed automatic transmissions in favor of Hyundai's own 8-speed automatics; Hyundai is the first full-fledged automaker in the world to build an 8-speed automatic transmission itself, rather that buying one from outside suppliers. (Not bad for a company that couldn't even build ANY automatics until 1988.)
−
−
The 5.0L V8 and the 8-speed automatic are also used on the Equus flagship.
−
−
The Genesis also gets minor exterior facelifts, but the interior remains unchanged. Which is a bit of a shame, because the Driver Information System, supplied by Harman-Kardon, is feeling quite outdated now compared to the competitors' navigation systems.

The upgrades do come at a price, however. A 2012 Genesis costs a few thousand dollars more than a comparable 2009 Genesis, though the 2012 model also has a few other upgrades such as electronic parking brake. But compared to the steep price hikes on the Lexus LS400 in the early 1990s (it went from $35,000 to well over $50,000 in just a few years), the price hike on the Genesis is rather modest. Part of it is due to South Korea's government keeping the value of the won artificially low (one of its background slimy tactics, even as it was pushing for a "free trade" agreement with the US, and starting a rumor about President Obama being a Muslim just because he wasn't playing right along). The R-Spec costs over $48,000.
