I am parked at a viewing area on WA-504 highway, which used to go through the area before the 1980 eruption, but now dead-ends at an observation point. In fact, the old WA-504 went through the valley floor in this area and was completely buried by the lava flow; the new road was built expressly for the purpose of getting visitors to the volcano's visitor centers and having them learn about the eruption, and to prevent being buried again, was built much higher up.
