Sgt Mapham was a press photographer for the Leicester Mercury before the Second World War. On joining the Army Film and Photographic Unit, he served with No 1 Section in North Africa and the Middle East during 1942 - 1943, before transferring to No 5 Section to cover North West Europe. On D Day, Sgt Mapham landed under heavy firewith 13/18 Hussars on Queen Beach at 08.00 hours and his subsequent photographs won international acclaim. Sgt Mapham went on to cover Allied operations in the North West Europe until VE Day in 1945.}}
