He was a Social Democrat in the Weimar Republic but dismissed and imprisoned under the Nazis several times. He led the DDR SDP into a merger with the Communist Party to form the SED. His name has been removed from streets eg. in Berlin (to become Mohrenstraße. (probably urged by descendents of those who weren't locked up in 1933)
