| Description = Common in steppe vegetation below montane forest. Stipa nelsonii seemingly takes the place of this species in grassy areas of montan forests and open woodlands. Green needlegrass is typically more robust, has hairs along the collar and sheath margin only, and has plump florets (i.e., a good 1 mm in diameter).
