Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock was born in Yorkshire in 1862 and joined the Royal Navy in 1875. In 1900 he saw action during the Boxer Rebellion, participating in the storming of the Taku Forts, the Relief of Tientsin and Siku. He was appointed Rear Admiral in 1910 and given command of the North American and West Indies Station in 1913. On the outbreak of war in 1914, Cradock's forces were charged with defending the east coast of the American continent which, within weeks, brought them into conflict with Admiral Graf von Spee's raiding force which was targeting merchant ships. On 1 November 1914, the opposing naval forces fought the Battle of Coronel off Chile during which Cradock's forces were outfought and destroyed with heavy loss of life. Cradock's flagship HMS GOOD HOPE was sunk with all hands, including Cradock himself.}}
