The head of the machine planking department inspects a 'hood', as the cone of felt is known, for any dirt or faults. Before this inspection, the 'form' (as it is known once removed from the copper cone) is inspected for faults and then is 'planked', or hardened, by rolling with boiling water and the addition of some sulphuric acid, a very skillful and time-consuming job. By the time the hood reaches the inspector, it will be a fifth of its original size: about 11 inches high and 15 inches across. This factory also uses a planking machine, which carries out the same process as hand-planking, but uses rollers and drums and is a bit quicker than the hand-process.}}
