| Description = When I was heading from Montana to Banff three days earlier, I had been forced to go hurriedly through Calgary in the wee hours of the morning, after a 3-hour border delay. So when I wrapped up with my Canadian Rockies sightseeing, instead of heading west for Vancouver immediately, I backtracked an hour east back to Calgary, in hopes of getting a few photographs and a hint of what this city has to offer. (I had never planned any specific timeframe for detailed Calgary sightseeing, since Calgary is a bit short on "major, must see" attractions.)

I parked my car at Stampede Park while I try to figure out the layout of the city and possible good photo spots. Stampede Park is the host of the annual Calgary Stampede in mid-July, and also is the home of the Calgary Flames ice hockey team. Additionally, some events of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, primarily indoor skating events, were held here.

I also appreciated Calgary for its lower fuel prices - the lowest I saw in the Canadian portion of my trip. I refueled in Calgary at a price of CAD $1.119 per liter (roughly USD $4 per US gallon), whereas I was looking at $1.159 in Banff, $1.259 in most of British Columbia, $1.209 at Kamloops (where I would make a fuel stop before the final push into Vancouver), and as high as a whopping $1.40 (USD $5.40 per US gallon) in Vancouver. For comparison, I paid anywhere from $3.45 to $3.80 per gallon in the US portions of my drive - Canadian fuel prices do trend slightly higher than US prices.
