The Native Americans were probably performers in Cody's Wild West stage show. The show, featuring trick shooting and horse riding, was very popular, generating money and publicity which Cody used to support his aeronautical work. It was reported on this occasion that when Cody started the aircraft's engines, the frightened visitors bolted, diving into the nearby Basingstoke Canal in their attempts to escape.}}
