25 year old Merchant Seamen Richard Pates arrives at the Merchant Navy Club in Piccadilly and is greeted by the female 'guide', Mrs Elsie Clunas in the entrance hall. Elsie is known by all at the club as 'Aunty Elsie', despite the fact that she is only 27 years old. She is also known as 'Geordie' Clunas, as she is from Newcastle. Before the war she was a window dresser. Several other Merchant Seamen await their turn at the counter, whilst others are helped by a male club 'guide'.}}
