*:::I didn't suggest that was what you did, but rather that that would be considered acceptable under KoH's metric. Which it clearly is not. [[User:LtPowers|Powers]] ([[User talk:LtPowers|talk]]) 21:29, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

*::::I understand well that the Google Earth satellite image is copyrighted and so is any satellite image. There is nothing left on my map that can be said to be the copyrighted image nor any kind of derivative work of it, except from information derived from them. Had I manipulated the original, it would surely be derivative work. I do not understand the legal issue, but I understand that it has nothing to do with either copyright or derivative work. The issue lies on a statement by Google that "You may not use Google Maps or Google Earth as the basis for tracing your own maps or other geographic content." [http://www.google.com/permissions/geoguidelines.html section #8]. Ever since I traced the map discussed here, and after it was proposed for deletion, I have worked on this very area with Open Streets Maps, which was blank before, but after a couple of weeks of voluntary work, I saw that the image of this same area that I could use from this OSM does not give me the necessary detail to display in a 800 × 574 pixel frame. The thing I find very weird is that had I not mentioned where I traced the image from, no one could ever prove it came from GE as it would be exactly the same had I had used the telephone catalog map or the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica map or even the ANCAP map (national company of fuel), none of which make any issue about tracing one's own maps from their copyrighted maps. So it is only my honest statement and Google's "you may not" statement that come in play, Not any copyright or derivative work issues. If Google's "you may not" has some OTHER legal basis, we could discuss about that maybe. [[User:Hoverfish|Hoverfish]] ([[User talk:Hoverfish|talk]]) 17:46, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

*:::::Indeed. The court doesn't care what Rural Telephone Service Company says, the law is that if you copy only facts, and not their creative expression, then you're fine. [[Commons:Derivative works#Maps]] states that "Geographic or topographic features" are not copyrightable; the location of roads can't be creatively changed without compromising the integrity of the facts. -- [[User:King of Hearts|King of]] [[User:King of Hearts|♥]] [[User talk:King of Hearts|♦]] [[Special:Contributions/King of Hearts|♣]] ♠ 01:52, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
